Debt Management Articles - Homelessness

If you are homeless or are going to be within the next 28 days the council will try to help you unless you are intentionally homeless (this does not include leaving your home because of violence or in extremely bad conditions in your home).

You should go to the Housing Department of the council to fill out an application for a home. The council will decide what priority you are and put you in an appropriate position in the waiting list.

You are higher priority if you are:
  • Homeless because of a flood, fire or other disaster.

  • Living with dependent children.

  • Pregnant or live with a pregnant person.

  • If you are 16 or 17.

  • If you are 18-21 and were in care until you were 16.

  • If you or someone you live with is in ill health, is elderly, is disabled, is recently out of prison, is recently out of the armed forces, fleeing violence or has been fostered.

The council may decide that you are not a priority for housing, therefore you may be placed far down the waiting list, or if you have no connections with the council (such as not working in the area) you may be referred to the appropriate council. This can mean you are homeless for sometime so you might consider help from the housing benefit that will help you pay rent. If you are in serious need and cannot get help quick enough from the council, ring free Shelterline on 0808 800 4444.
